Fuliginosus or Capensis?

Fuliginosus or Capensis?

Postby Oanatolitis » Wed Jun 18, 2014 6:23 pm

Was wondering if anyone can identify the species. I've had her a little over 3,5 years and would like to seek a male for her (currently living in Greece). So far i've had 5 people all with different opinions.

She feeds on 60grm rats every 7 and then 10 days. Length is roughly 1,4m

Hmmm always a tough one.

To me that looks like fuliginosis. Capensis tends to have a much clearer and bolder lower eye line (not the top prominent one).

But I am simply guessing.

Only capensis occur in RSA.

That looks like capensis to me, possibly Natal locality.

I agree with Westley the eye stripe does look abit thin for capensis. But usually you see more uniform unpatterend fuliginosus in the pet trade, the size is another factor, I have never seen a 100% confirmed fuliginosus that size, but then again the head looks a bit "sharper" to me as well.

I'm going with capensis.

That's not capensis. Where are you based?

As he stated, he is living in Greece. Variation within capensis is huge. I have seen capensis with virtually no markings on the head besides the characteristic line above each eye.

Jamster, the lines towards the nose on capensis is closed. I respect your opinion despite not agreeing slightly. Enough said.

The lines towards the nose of this bhs are "closed". Oanatolitis, where did you get the snake? Perhaps the previous owner/seller/breeder has some info on its origin.

Long story short, got it off an add. the guy was shivering when i took her out cause it apparently bit him, and was sold to me as male.
What are your thoughts Jamster? I really want to get a male to breed her this year.

Again thanks for the help so far

Would not a scale count solve the problem, I can't find any info on the net but maybe someone else can provide the scale counts for each.
