Week for some herping around WP

Week for some herping around WP

Postby S73PH » Fri Aug 15, 2014 8:46 pm

Hello all, I,m heading to Western Province on a family vacation, I'll be spending most of my time in Stellenbosch and Blouberg Strand as well as some time on Table Mountain. I'd like to do some site and reptile seeing. Any reptiles reccomended to be on the look out for.
My last expedition to Plett gifted my with an array of reptiles, the highlight was a seasnake I saw on a dive( I am yet to iddentify it)

All recomendations are much appreciated.

The sea snake is probably a Yellow-bellied Sea Snake. (Pelamis platura) Sorry I did not answer your question, do not live in SA, just thought I could help with the ID.

I go to the cape every December and even though I don't do much herping I do manage to see some reptiles. The most common for me have been cape cobras, puffadders, girdled lizards, agamas, boomslang, grass snakes, mole snakes, parrot beaked tortoises and you may see dwarf chameleons especially around Stellenbosch.
I've herped the slopes of Table Mountain and found most of what's on my list but I don't think there's as many snakes at the top.
What a world....

If you have time, I suggest Tygerberg Nature Reserve.

I know it's a bit off your planned journey, but well worth the trip. Some nice snakes are other reptiles around.

Otherwise you can climb Lion's Head. That used to be my Friday ritual and always saw tons of reptiles.
