Importing Ball pythons into Western Cape

Postby Deano » Fri Sep 12, 2014 4:42 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum. I would like to import Ball pythons from Gauteng into the Western Cape. I have been going through the forum posts on this topic and most are relatively old. Is the process still that (1) I have to apply to Cape Nature for an import permit and (2) the seller in Gauteng has to apply for an export permit? Is the Cape Nature import permit also a transport permit (and different from the normal internal transport permit) that would allow me to take the snake home from the airport? To get the Cape Nature import permit, do I need a letter from the seller stating his details and that he is selling the specific snake to me? I tried the download link to Cape Nature permits on this site and it was down. It there another link I could try?

Many thanks!

I imported some ball pythons just last week and it's a fairly simple process.

You apply to Cape Nature for a import permit. This is also a transport permit so it enables you to take the animals from the airport to where ever they will be kept.

The seller in Gauteng doesn't need to apply for a export permit but he does have to send you a letter with his details saying you are buying those animals and that there is no conservation authority in Gauteng that can issue an export permit.

If you need the import permit application form please send me a PM with your e-mail address and I can send you a e-mail with the form.
Send the application form and letter to Cape Nature and you are sorted.
Nearly forgot. You have to pay R100 to Cape Nature or if you are in a rush you can pay R200 'express fee' and the permit will arrive quickly.
