Transport and Captivity Permit frustration

Postby AshSmulian » Mon Sep 22, 2014 5:46 pm

Hi everyone,

Ive encountered a bit of a problem regarding transport permits and captivity permits.
I recently got my first snake, a 150g male Ball Python, and I applied for a transport permit to get him to me.
I have him now and emailed Cape Nature about getting a captivity permit.
The problem now comes in as I am moving house in about a months time. I will be in my new house for about 3-6 months then I will probably have to move again. Leigh-Anne from CN says I must now apply for another transport permit and then apply for a captivity permit. Problem is, I dont know when I will be able to settle down in a house again. I have been battling for months to find a house. So now must I pay hundreds of Rands everytime I am forced to move around. :-?
Sound kind of crazy to me. Can I not just update my current transport permit with the new address?? -.-

Please help me out on this one guys.
Thanks in advance(:

From CapeNatures side its not there problem you keep on changing address, permits might be a schlep but it as its uses as well.

That might be true. But I cant help but feel they arent on us Herpers' side in these matters.
Why cant I just email them the new/current address and they add it to their system? Instead of making me pay hundreds of rands and make me wait up to 3 weeks everytime I have apply for a permit. I dont think its right. Its also not my choice to keep moving. I HAVE to move when my lease expires.

Wait for it...
Screw permits.
Perhaps I will take them seriously when they are not so narrow minded and opposed to the hobby. And when they take their jobs seriously and actually start doing their jobs, properly.

I couldn't agree any more.

I only seem to get any transport permits for them when I apply for express permits, adding to the expense.

In the case of Captivity permits, I've been waiting for mine for over 18 months.

Cape Nature head office contacted me and gave my details to the local office. The local office phoned me and asked how I'm keeping my snakes (Carpet Pythons then) and I told him; he said he was satisfied with how they're being kept and would tell head office to issue my permit.

That's the last I've heard. I'm still waiting.

I've got copies of all the transport permits of snakes I've bought or sold over the last 18 months so when they do finally issue my permit I can just add it to my register.

The joys of living in the Cape.

That's pathetic. How do they expect us do to what's expected of us, if they don't do what's expected of them ?

Don't worry about a captivity permit for now - just keep the snake on your transport permit.
When you move, apply for another transport permit to your new address.
This way you have to pay 100.- rand each time you move and once you are more settled apply for a captivity permit.

From my experience, CN's staff have been helpful and efficient in every aspect. Far more efficient and organised, not to mention approachable, than any of the other provincial conservation agencies I've had to deal with. Gauteng is slow, but even there I found an angel in disguise. Be patient, but also talk to the person helping you with your application. Complaining on a forum...I just don't see the point. I have no complaints with CN at all.
