White frog?

Postby dwspv » Wed Dec 31, 2014 10:10 am

Hello Guys,

On a visit to a farm in Limpopo Province about 30km from Vivo, this little guy took a flying leap from the top of the boma onto the floor. The camera was at hand, but it was quite skittish and a bad photo model for not sitting still long enough and allowing me to get some decent shots.

Not being an expert, I was wondering if someone could ID this guy and also say how common they are? I cannot really get any images on Google that help much.

Hi

It's called a foam nest frog (Chiromantis xerampelina). Very common in the bush veld areas, especially this time of the year during the rainy season. The make a nest on branches over puddles by rubbing their legs together and form a white blob of foam type substance. Eggs are laid in the nest and once the tadpoles emerge from their eggs, they drop off into the puddle of water below and continue with their cycle of life.

Hi Mathandanyoka

Thanks for the reply. This then answers a question we had on the image below too - none of our guesses were even close!

Guess we really need to get out a bit more often......

Thanks Predator for liking the photos!

Interesting, we're both in Polokwane... Have not had time to update all the Profile stuff..

Sure thing.

Yup, small town with very few clued up herpers.

Interestingly also, according to the literature I know of, Chyromantis xerampelina does not occur here, however you will find them in abundance in certain areas at Tweefontein; there was even a sighting of a mating orgy (which this species is so famous for) right in the middle of the parking lot at Thornhill shopping center.

I'd love to find a juvenile and raise it. Anybody know if these can be identified as tadpoles perhaps ?
