Introducing Happy Go Lucky - my new baby

Postby Chantel » Fri Jan 02, 2015 9:42 pm

Sadly I lost my horse Georgie's Best last year to West Nile Virus. It was a very traumatic time for me, as I loved him dearly.

I was still reeling in shock from losing him, when I got a call from a friend about a big 3 year old bay gelding that had just finished racing. He suggested I go have a look at him to see if I like him, but I was so shattered about losing George and was hardly in a state of mind to start looking for a new horse. After thinking about it for a while, I thought there could be no harm in going to have a look. Well, to cut a long story short - I took one look at him and fell in love. So two days later we loaded him on the horse box and bought him home.

Unfortunately registered thoroughbreds often get given horrible names, so he ended up getting called Lucky Lux :D . Needless to say, he helped me get through the loss of Georgie and he has brought me much happiness. I'm truly lucky to have Lucky :)

Here are some pics of my "new" boy:

The first day I met Lucky - all lean muscle from racing:

And then finally welcomed to his new home:

Sorry to hear about George but Lucky looks like handsome replacement. It's strange to see a snake person so comfortable around horses or rather should I say a horse so comfortable around a snake woman! In my limited horse experience, never shall the two meet on good terms. Looks like you have mastered both worlds Chantel.

Do you think he misses racing considering that's what he was bred for? He looks far happier with you now than when you picked him up.

Can you innoculate against West nile virus?

Thanks everyone :)

BV, I doubt he misses racing. As you noticed, he's a very happy horse now :). And we gallop plenty, believe me ... there are so many hills here where we ride and we very seldom have an outride without a fast gallop. And he LOVES that.

West Nile Virus is apparently very rare, and I'm afraid I never actually asked if there is a vaccine for WNV. Here in SA (or anywhere in Africa), there is far more emphasis put on innoculating against African Horse Sickness which sadly kills many horses every year :)

Here are some pics from today. Went on a 20km ride, and it was impossible to not go for a swim! :) Please excuse the bad quality pics - only had my cell phone camera.

And some pics of my friend on her Arab mare, also having fun in the water:
