Hey guys
So I just recently acquired a Pair of Savu pythons
I am really looking forward to working with these beautiful snakes!
I haven't seen many of them so im assuming that there aren't many around
They are an adult pair so hoping to get lucky this coming season, but heard that getting eggs isnt very easy
any info you have on them would be appreciated in terms of breeding etc..
here are a few pics of them

Awesome man, I didnt know there were pairs of these around.

I have seen singles for sale once every few years, but having a pair is epic.

Good luck with them!

Getting them to mate is pretty easy. I have seen this tons of times. I have yet to see a single egg produced by this species. I dont have the answer so keep records of everything you do so that if you do get it right you can do the same a year later.

They are worth as much as an individual's interest to keep them but I would say between 4-6k ZAR

Bushviper is spot on. My pair locked on numerous occasions this season, but nothing, not even slugs. Will have to try something different next time. Even though they not often seen, they are not so pricey. I suppose it would be different if they were proven breeders

Would it be worth studying the local climate on the island to try to recreate it using a thermostat, hygrometer and spray bottle?

Of course one has to bear in mind that the snakes hide during the day so they wont be exposed to the full brunt of the weather, but at least this gives an indication of when to warm, when to cool and how much to cool.

Here is some climate info FYI, stolen from http://www.worldweatheronline.com/Savu-weather-averages/Central/FJ.aspx

Very interesting and thank you Westley. Wow,those are some serious average temps. Will have to turn up the temps, especially in our harsh winters. It would also be interesting to know if the specimens in collections here are CB or WC. They seem to be breeding well in Australia, even with morphs available I think. I believe in the 90s they were going to be the "next big thing",but then all the ball python morphs appeared and were more lucrative, more money in it. So the savus were sort of left in the bottom shelves and more or less forgotten about.

Nope none in Australia. It is illegal to keep them there. I dont know of any morphs being available either.

The reason why Savus went off the boil is because they could not breed them in captivity and there is only one tiny section of the island where they were being collected. Eventually there were basically none left to export and the numbers have taken years to build up again. The ones that were in captivity still did not breed like all their relatives and nobody cared about them any more.

They are really under rated as collectors items.

I think I once read something about a silver savu morph, however I'm not too sure, maybe its just a lighter colored snake, and not a proven morph. Albino also rings a bell, but again ,I'm not sure.

There is a silver morph, but it's not a recessive morph. It's just a phase, not really a morph. I think there's a red phase too.

Savu pythons are incredible snakes. I have a group of 5 here with me and I've had loads of mating over the last two years with no success. But will keep at it and hopefully produce some. I think after the blackheads these are next on my "dream to breed" list ;)

I hope you are successful with these Mikezo !

Louis
