After 20 years of keeping all sorts of snakes, brown housies are still one of my favourite snakes!

If I lived in SA, I would be very tempted by a king snake - I think they're stunning and also excellent starter snakes (I had several when I was at varsity).

What are the pros and cons of Corn Snakes, Brown House Snakes and King Snakes? In terms of me getting my first snake. Thanks guys.

Great choices Ryan95!

Corns and Brown house snakes make great pets! They are easy to handle and are very tolerant of us humans. Definitely great snakes for beginners! I would also suggest Ball Pythons they are such sweethearts, though they are heavy bodied.

I have only handled one King snake before and it was a Florida King. He was just as calm and sweet but I cannot account for the general King Snake behavior.

How big of a snake will you be comfortable with though? Some people are okay with Corn snakes but intimidated by Ball Pythons. The King Snakes get rather big too, probably depending on which one you choose too.

They're all awesome really… I suggest you search through some old posts on this forum, look at lots of pics, and read the odd informative article - and then forget all of that when you go into the pet shop and choose the snake that immediately takes your fancy! Have fun.

I'm comfortable with these snake's adult sizes. The only snakes I wouldn't handle are the giant pythons and boas over 3m long. At least not as a beginner.
