Permits for corn snake???

Postby MarineXII » Sat Jul 18, 2015 5:38 pm

Hello,
Today I went to my local pet store to check their corn snakes out. When I got there they told me that we need a license to keep a corn snake. Is this true and when did this law come in to play? I am in Gauteng by the way.

Hi.
As far as i know it was always a law to have permits for exotic snakes.
Please make sure from your Nature Conservation Office if your petshop is allowed to sell you corn snakes as at the moment I know there is a whole issue around the species which was by accident listed on the Invasive Species list.

As for as I am aware, this law has not yet been passed so you can still buy your Corns without permits until then.

Does anybody still care about new legislation concerning the keeping of exotics in this country? I certainly don't anymore

I speak under correction, but I have always understood that in Gauteng one needs Permits for Indiginous Snakes but not for Exotics such as Corns and Kings.

The owner of the pet shop is clueless. Corn snakes may not be bought, sold. traded with, bred or transported as they are listed as an invasive species. It means you are allowed to own them but cannot do anything with them. You may not even have them in a pet shop.

However recent legislation proposed that they will be removed from the list because it is impractical and actually non-scientific so as a result soon corn snakes will not be restricted. However because the proposed legislation is already in the pipeline nobody will be prosecuted at this stage.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

Oh... That explains a lot. I also saw there was a petition held to have them removed from the invasive species list which also turned out victorious... Here is the link if anyone wants to check out the petition page: https://www.change.org/p/mrs-edna-molew ... ecies-list

Lucky corns, I wonder how scientific and practical the other choices were though

I get the distinct impression no actual research/studies were done to assess which species are potentially invasive.

The list smacks of simply being compiled off the work of first world countries. Copy and paste exercise.
