A New Project (Hopefully)

A New Project (Hopefully)

Postby Mehelya » Thu Sep 10, 2015 12:59 pm

I haven't shown off these little babies on here, as far as I know... I acquired an adult female house snake, and didn't know that she was gravid at the time, but soon realized when she started gaining weight that something was brewing...

She laid six eggs, all hatched, but two hatchlings died over the course of the next few weeks (unknown issues as is wont to happen, and a drowning). Four of them remain, and I finally decided to pop them on here, as they are all eating on their own now, and I personally feel something interesting is going on with her offspring...

Without further ado, here are some pics of the little beggars...

The majority of the clutch look like this little one...
Image

Then there were two of these lighter ones (one sadly drowned itself in half an inch of water, still don't know how that happened?!)
Image
when this little one started getting lighter, as opposed to the others getting darker, I started to get a little excited... It is definitely different!

A light one, with a darker sibling for comparison (Photo taken about 2 months ago)
Image

The light ones seem to be getting lighter, and the dark ones are definitely getting darker, but if they survive through to breeding age I will definitely start doing some breeding to see what is going on here.

Any ideas or comments are welcome!

Thanks for looking! ;)

Lovely specimens you have there. I had a small adult male with the exact same colouration. I don't think it's something special per se, just that some snakes have a darker colour than others. Just like skin colour variance within the same ethnic group among humans.

Very Nice Indeed B.

Whatever it is, it will be interesting to see just how light it gets.

Thanks Predator, we can always hope though. I can be overly zealous about the slightest differences, and hopefully one day that will stand me in good stead as far as the reptiles goes. ;) I'm sure this is how a lot of the different morphs in other get started. Those tiny differences are noted, and tested. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you just get a lot of pretty normals...

Roland, I have a funny feeling it's going to carry on getting lighter as it ages, as the siblings are already darkening out quite quickly. I'll snap some shots again towards the end of the year, once they've shed a few more times, and then see what differences, if any, there are. Even if it turns out to be nothing, they are still very nice nearly patternless specimens, which will do well in the breeding side with some of the other plans I have. ;)

I apologize to everyone for not updating sooner! Completely forgot about this thread!

Snapped a quick shot of the light one last night, and I will let the picture speak for itself. I will take some photos tonight upload a group shot of the 3 together again.

Most specimens from around Polokwane look like that. Is it a male ?

Yes it is a male, and I have a sibling female that I will put him to, and see what happens. The mother is so old, she ahs been permanently retired from breeding now. She is turning black all over, and only eats fuzzy mice, or smaller now...

Decided that since two of the three keepers from this clutch weren't in shed, I'd snap some outdoor photos quickly... The mother sadly passed away last week, and she will be missed, but her genes will carry on.

Maybe I should add some albino to this lot, and see what pops out in two generations... Thansk for looking.

So, the three siblings are all shed now, and I took some quick shots the other night while cleaning the water bowls...

Without ado, here they are...

And... Instead of opening up a new thread, I will post some pics of some adults (six of the nine I have) that I hope will breed this season. They are all in brumation at the moment, and I'm trying out a different, longer, and more natural means of brumation, and will see how it affects the breeding of them, if it yields the results I am looking for, I will post it here, and then move it onto some other indigenous species, and see if I get better results with them.

Without any more fuss and gabbing on, here are the adults in no particular order:

Have fun breeding them B.
Personally, I like no.4, that red is very nice indeed.

Roland, I'll take a photo of that one in the sun this weekend, as well as two others, if I get a chance, and if the weather plays along. ;) The red ones we get here are rather nice though... ;)
