Injured Brown House Snake

Postby QBallZA » Tue Dec 20, 2011 12:38 pm

Hi,

I rescued a small brown house snake from my one cat yesterday. it is probably 35-40cm long.
I dont know how long the cat was playing with it but i eventually saved it and put it in a tank. It appears that the snake is barely mobile. I am not sure if it has sustained internal injuries, but it does have a few small claw marks on its body, but they don't seem to be too bad.
The snake is better today than it was yesterday afternoon however I am worried at its seeming inability to move properly.
I am new to snakes etc. and any input would be beneficial.
Lastly, this is probably the 6th snake that my cat has brought in in the last few months. I assume that they are coming from the top of my garden where he also brings in moles and shrews etc. from.
I have been giving them to my gf's friend who lives on a small holding and has terreriums and leopard geko's etc. but they havent been too successful in getting them to feed.
Ideas for this possibly injured snake please?
thanks,

Try to disinfect the wounds. Also, keep the snake warm, this will speed up healing.

Be careful with your cat, our cat used to bring in dead snakes. Then about a year ago she tried to mess with a baby puffy, which tagged her on the paw. She was dead in minuits. :(

If the snake is unable to move then it will die. Either in the cage or back in the wild. Cats will chew on them and sever the vertebrae. That does not recover easily. A vet will be able to euthanase the snake. Sorry but that is the risk of owning a cat who has hunting instincts and wants to kill animals.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I have since last post put iodine on the small wounds that the snake has incurred.
It seems more mobile in the last few hours, so hoping that it will recover sufficiently. it observes my movement while holding it....moves its head/tongue!!!
Still does not seem to like moving though, although since i put in back in tank I see that it has since moved to another area.

I love those little guys, and I hope for the best that the little guy will pull through(If he does make it, if you choose to release him, preferably somwhere far from where you found him, otherwise your cat will just get him again).
