Sick baby beardy

Postby Quintinvdm » Sun Jul 14, 2013 9:54 am

Got beardy about 2 weeks ago.

Told she was 6 weeks old. Not very active or interested in food.

Two weeks latter shes dragging her back legs and I am force feeding he and putting her in warm water to keep her hydrated.

Just wondering if anyone has had similar experience. Do I continue or am I prolonging her suffering.

Thanks

First step take your Bearded Dragon to reptile vet for a proper diagnosis and a treatment plan.

Is there a UV light and a basking lamp in the cage? If so, what are the temperatures?

Could you post pictures of her and post them here?

If its MBD its due to a lack of calcium (with D3) or proper exposure to UV light. I read a while back that it could also be that the food items are too large and its putting pressure on the spinal chord.

I agree, take her to a vet asap, but in the mean time maybe syringe feed her some purity with calcium mixed so at least she can gain some strength. Give a run down on her enclosure and the temps you are keeping. What area are you in?

I agree as well, a vet trip sounds very in order. I wish the little girl well. I would ask lots of questions of the seller, too, and get as many records as possible from them.

For future consideration, I would urge you to always be wary of an animal that is not too active or interested in food...if you really like the animal, put a hold deposit on it and let it stay with the dealer until its health is clearer.

Good luck!

I agree with snakesitter but yes a trip to the vet would be best in my opinion.

Thanks to everyone who posted comments.

Was a bit ignorant, had a basking lamp but no UVB also was not using calcium supplement.

Added UVB and started using supplement. Been force feeding. Today, for the first time when I offered her the pinheads she ate with gusto.

With regards to the vet, I was told by my local pet shop that cannot get a permit for beardies in my province and that i should either get rid of her or keep quiet so vet is not an option.

The little thing has crawled right into my heart so I would hate to get rid of her.

I assume that you are in the Western Cape from your comment about legalities.

Where abouts are you situated?

I know of a vet in Cape Town who has no problem working with Beardies.

Thanks, but in Eastern Cape - East London. If anyone knows of sympathetic vets here please let me know.

Beardies outlawed? Wow. You should be able to find a vet though -- here in California, plenty of people own ferrets (I do not), which are supposedly illegal...but they still get vet care. For many vets, pet health comes first. Good luck!
