Snake keeping and loadshedding?

Snake keeping and loadshedding?

Postby Ryan95 » Wed Jul 01, 2015 10:16 am

Hi guys I'm looking into getting snakes some time soon and I'm worried about the loadshedding. How do you guys keep you snakes warm in winter with loadshedding? Thanks.

You don't have to worry, if your room is insulated well enough it won't get too cold but also when the power comes back on the snake can heat up again.

If your room isn't insulated (like my garage) this trick might help.

You will need:
2 x bricks
2 x ceramic pots with drainage holes
3 x tea light candles
2 x small pieces of polystyrene

What to do with them:
Place one pot upside down on the bricks with the three tea light candles under it in the middle of your room.
Place the other pot over the first with the polystyrene pieces as spacers so the pots don't sit directly on each other. Take care that the holes are staggered. (you should see the base of the first pot through the holes of the second)

This method can heat a closed room for up to 6 hours but takes a while to warm up, so prepare it about half an hour to an hour before you expect your load shedding.

Hope this helps =)

Just buy one of those "camping"style generators.I did a little research and ended up buying the Honda EU20i.Its wisper quiet and is pretty powerful dispite its small size.
I am so impressed with the little honda I even run my TV/DSTV, wifi router and all my lights from it.
My neighbour ended up buying the Kippor IG2600 its about 2-3k cheaper if you don't mind Chinese.
Just stay away from the cheap open frame gensets the noise will drive you and your neighbours crazy.

That 'pot-heater' sounds intriguing... but Im having a hard time visualizing the setup... can you maybe post a pic for the less imaginative ones of us?

Its also a cheep way to warm up a room for those on student budgets lol, costs about 200 bucks to set up and from then on about R6-10 per use depending on how much your candles are =)

Polystyrene will melt in next to no time. No idea why you would use them as spacers. Use small pieces of tile.

I see there are numerous UPS systems which are running off batteries and will run most snakes rooms for a number of hours at minimal costs. Most heating pads are around 14 to 20 watts. Ten heating pads are only 200 watts and these systems can handle that easily.

I have asked a herper who is the Director of Ubuntu systems for an idea aimed at herpers especially those with incubators and tropical snakes who cannot take long periods without power. He has said he will look into it and get back to us.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
