Trip to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Well here we go again... We've just arrived back from an awesome 10 day trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier park. We only stayed on the South African side, but the sightings were amazing. Please forgive me if the details given in this post are not quite as detailed as you might want, I'm never certa...

Help please

I'm not sure if anyone would be willing to help. But I teach at an underprivileged school in Middelburg and we are doing animal classifications at the moment. I was wondering if there is anyone in or around Middelburg who perhaps has a reptile they might be willing to bring to show my gr 7 class. Un...

Poor shows at Mbidi Lodge, Mpumalanga

Hi there. I was wondering if anybody has been to Mbidi lodge? John, aka the "tigerman" did a "snake show" the other day for a group of black primary school students. He started off by asking who was scared of snakes and when only a couple kids put up their hands, he opened an enc...

Re: Recent Black Mamba Sightings

First off with regards to the Malaria situation. There is no malaria risk in the south African portion of the Kgalagadi National Park. In Kruger the central and Northern park is classed as medium risk and in summer the southern part is classed as a low risk, however, in winter the southern park is c...

Re: Recent Black Mamba Sightings

I agree that is is sad how few people would truly appreciate these sightings. Especially given that it is rarer for us to see these than to see leopard or lion in the park! We are always on the lookout for snakes, and yet actually see so few of them!

You're most welcome to tag along anytime! :-)

Recent Black Mamba Sightings

Well, I know it’s been ages since I last posted on the site, however, I haven’t had much to write about. However, we have recently had two very exciting encounters with black mambas. In December we were staying in the Kruger Park at Maroela campsite, and we went across to Sweni bird hide, on the Eas...

Re: Where to buy metal rods for hooksticks

Hi Bush Snake

In Edenvale, there is a place called Edenvale Steel and Tube, they are on Van Riebeeck avenue, quite close to Green Stone Mall. In the dip heading into Edenvale away from Greenstone. They sell all kinds and shapes of steel, they should be able to help you out, they also cut to size.

Re: Recycling

Hey Stiffy

Pick 'n Pay runs a recycling program for batteries as well as the low energy light bulbs. At the entrance to most of the large PnP's they have two boxes, one to place old batteries into and one for the light bulbs.

Hope this helps you.

Re: Finally I introduce myself

Thanks for the answers.
To Bushviper:
I have posted a couple of extra pics that I took of these animals onto the gallery, I just didn't want to jam up the forum with tons of pics of the same animals. But it was definitely a bull frog that was going to be lunch.

Re: Finally I introduce myself

I would say that the legless skink was about 40-50 cm long.

Tell me, how do you easily tell the difference between a legless skink and a snake? I was under the impression that skinks had external ears whilst snakes didn't, perhaps somebody can help me with this.
