Re: Maden dam outing

Apologies, I spelt it incorrectly, it's Maden dam. It's near King Williamstown in the Eastern Cape, see here: http://tinyurl.com/madendam It's right at the start of the Amatola hiking trail - Evelyn valley loop section. Right in the middle of the awesome amatola indigenous forest. It's possible that...

Maiden dam outing

We were out at maiden dam for the butterfly census and came across this beaut of a Philothamnus Semivariegatus. He was right at the dam's edge and my first grab spooked him and sent him flying into the water... needless to say instinct took over and I went in fully clothed. one of the bigger ones I'...

Stop acting clever. It''s private information made available to friends and family.

Re: Reptile for Spider Control?

Hi Guys, First off, seems like this forum is the right place to ask this question (just registered to do so). I have a serious outbreak of black widow spiders in my garden currently. I’ve stayed at the house for over 6 years and never even spotted one. Lately I have been going around killing these ...

Re: awsome find!!

I agree Graeme, it's simple... medical importance. Causus bites can definitely be of medical importance, particularly in children and the elderly. Defilippii in particular.

Re: ID please

I'm amazed at just how many requests for Herald ID's come through. Just makes you realise how well distributed they are, particularly around human habtat.

Re: Spider ID please :)

I don't think so, its a tiny spider - about 1.5cm. If anything, it reminds me more of a sheetweb or silver vlei.

Re: ID Please

Hey Kevin, take this in the spirit it was given... JEST :) http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Palystes+superciliosus On the serious side, it's better that the scientific name be given - more accurate. One common name can apply to multiple sub sp. Google will sort the common name out very easily, besides, some peo...

Re: Northern Cape smuggler bust

It's unfortunate because many of the laws and permit procedures really discourage people from keeping exotic reptiles and also promote the illegal trade. The offices involved in nature conservation, etc are incompetent and the individuals are uneducated. This hobby could thrive all over the country...

Re: Northern Cape smuggler bust

This hobby could thrive all over the country with the right people in control but all we have is 90% illegal trade and 10% legal captivity. The cause of smuggling /poaching is simple ,its about money so tighter control is not going to help , we will always have the guys looking to make quick money....
