feeding on sand

feeding on sand

Postby bguston@yahoo.com » Sat Sep 03, 2011 11:30 am

Hey guys I only have the one young sand boa left and she's doing great, eating like a champ(3-4 pinks a week)

My question is, Can I feed her on her sand inside the cage or do i have to feed her separately with newspaper?

She's about 8 months old :D

I would imagine that it would be fine, sand grains are so small they'l probably pass though the snakes system harmlessly, and will come out when it deficates.

But then again, maybe feeding her on newspaper would be safer....

No. People feed on newspaper to prevent impaction. Although rare, it does happen.

My problem is that she doesn't want to eat outside of the cage, she like to come underneath the pink, lift it up and then strike and coil it

A tip that I do with my ksb is to hold the pink in the air just above the snake in the sand and wait till she strikes it and then move her to a feeding tub making sure there is no sand to ingest. Did this until she felt comfortable to take in her feeding tub. Which she does now.

Hope this works, It did for me.

PS: Never feed on sand not good idea.

I keep my ball pythons on kenaf substrate and found they feed better when in their enclosures. As a compromise I feed in the enclosure but make sure the ball strikes the food coils it and I then lift the ball into an upturned hide box so it can feed in the enclosure but off the substrate.

Use a tub that stays inside the cage. Put her food in there and she will learn to go eat it there. The tub can have newspaper in it and the snake can go in there to be fed.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
