Mamba - Nagle Dam

Mamba - Nagle Dam

Postby Smeegle » Thu Mar 25, 2010 9:24 pm

Hi Guys,

I thought you may be interested in a Mamba that I came across whilst fishing at Nagle dam, nestled in the valley of 1000 hills. This guy was huge and really fast! I first tried to catch up using the electric trolling motor, but eventually had to start the main motor to cut him off. I didn't have a great camera with me, and the pictures don't really do the snake justice, but it was still and awesome experience!

I often come across snakes on the water, but this guy was by far the most impressive!

Its interesting to see how far it could raise its head from the water surface. It really looks quite comfortable in the water !
Great pics.

Wow! good stuff. reminds me of all those years ago when we were rescuing snake from the newly constructed Kariba Dam; a good few black mambas in the water then too! Plus puffies bobbing about with their built-in self-inflating life jackets.

Did you see where the snake was heading BTW?

What a coincidence,Ive been thinking alot lately about how we have almost no pics of wild BMs on the forums.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed these.

Thanks for the replies! He was on his way from the perimeter of the dam to the centre island, a distance of about 600m. I was quite far away when I noticed the disturbance on the water surface when he entered the dam, and eventually caught up with him in the middle.

I had to get quite close to him with my "muk en druk" camera, and although I kept cutting him off to try get a decent pic, he constantly warned me to go away never once tried to attack, only tried to get away. I think you would really have to corner one of these guys to get bitten. So much for those folklore tales about about the mamba chasing the guy on horseback!
