A Small Mission

A Small Mission

Postby Scavenger » Tue Oct 26, 2010 10:47 pm

On Sunday night myself and Fooble decided to go for a little mission, this was a spur of the moment thing. So we hadn't really prepared ourselves too well  . It wasn't the greatest of nights for reptiles but for frogs we really out did ourselves plus we had one really rare encounter, that some bird enthusiasts might enjoy :)

Species encountered:

Kwazulu Dwarf Chameleon Bradypodion melanocephalum
Red Toad Schismaderma carens
Guttural Toad Bufo gutturalis
Natal Forest Tree Frogs Leptopelis natalensis
Painted Reed Frogs Hyperolius marmoratus
Greater Leaf Folding Frogs Afrixalus fornasinii
Snoring Puddle Frogs Phrybobatrachus natalensis
Common River Frogs Afrana angolensis

Never thought I'd see a Palmnut Vulture, let alone down the road from where I live these are reported to be very rare raptors, we came across this one roosting in some pine trees near a River.

Unfortunately managed only two frog species photographs, hope you enjoyed and I'm sure Fooble would like to share some of his pics ;)

Wow that vulture must have had you buzzing. I saw one up at Hluluwe but it was far away and I could not make it our clearly.

Sam, those frogs aren't what we though seeing photos and in light!

As the dreaded one said Forests have vertical pupils , these are Tinker reed frogs horizontal eyes.

Our bad!

Great photo's!

Awesome pics guys!!!

I've gone on several amphibian missions in the last few weeks but with no luck of finding anything but the common frogs.

Im moving to Tulbagh in a few weeks time... On the mountains across the farm is the area where the Northern Moss Frog occurs - Arthroleptella subvoce.
It is possbly the smallest frog in SA.

Very nice guys. That Greater Leaf Folding Frog is a real looker.
