Hey, found this little dude this morning in my garden. He was also really small so I took photos and let him go. ~10cm. For a small snake he was seriously agro! about 20 strikes in 5 mins.

Species: Red-lipped Herald (I know its supposed to be Red-Lipped OR Herald snake, but old habits die hard :) ).

Found: Southern Gauteng, near Vaal Dam.

Nice!

What other species to you find in that area? I'd imagine the odd Rinkhals crops up as well?

Wow he Is beautiful!!

Well just an update...i decided on keeping my little guy and he is feeding and everything seems to be going well..yet to actually see him eat since he only does it when i cover his cage and its really dark and by the time i look to see how he is doing the chow is gone...lol

He is very chilled and have yet to see him strike at anything, he just kinda flattens his head when distressed...will post some more pics when i catch him feeding :)

Thanks to all again

I see that the herald is under mildly venomous, didnt know that. Been keeping snakes for 20 years, been bitten by heralds lots(mostly rescues). Never felt like they had venom, just bleeds alot because of their large back fangs.
Anyway, was interesting to hear. Learn something new everyday.

Just something quick off-topic:

Here is a nice link for those interested in how grooved fangs work (like the Herald's). It's a very short, simple read, but still useful.

Hey roxboy

I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to know how your little Herald is doing? I'm also taking on the challenge of raising a young Herald :D she is just a bit bigger than when you found yours :)
My furry (and not so furry) friends are:
1 Cat (Moanie)
1 Siamese Rat (Zoey)
1 Russian Dwarf Hamster (Di Di)
1 Mongolian Gerbil (Houdini)
3 Fancy Mice
4 Tropical Fish
1 Herald snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia)

Hey there is also a member here who is going through the same thing as you are. They found a lil herald and want to keep it. I think their name is 'sneakysnakie'. You should msg them and maybe find out what they have chosen to do, or at least you can keep in touch to share the info you each recieved. I'm not sure how they are going with their snale but its always nice to share with somebody in the same situation. Hopefully you both shall end up happy snake owners...JP
