Postby Jamster » Wed Jun 08, 2011 12:17 pm

Hi guys,

Ive got a contact in Cebe,Transkei who has asked me to ID snakes for her, her photos were all very clear, with headshots, etc. So ID was easy for all snakes except one.

Looks like a Southern brown Egg Eater but can't make out if the scales are keeled form that photo.

I think that it is a Naja sp.

To me the scales would seem smooth... That colour, smooth scales, I'd reckon you've got a Cape cobra.. Naja nivea.

I'd say egg eater.
I'm sure that if it had smooth scales there would be alot more light being reflected. Naja sp. have more defined scales that we would be able to see clearly on this picture.

I'm with fooble, southern brown egg eater.
The scales on the top don't look round enough to be a Naja.

And I agree with THEO the snake would shine more if it was Naja.

My first thought was also Southern Brown Eggies, but I changed my mind after a closer look.

Fooble, aren't the scales a bit small for Dasypeltis?

Can't it possibly be a light coloured Olve House Snake and the flash simply made it look even lighter?

I don't think it is a southern brown. I just had a look at my specimen, and the colour here is just too yellow. A southern brown is, well, much more brown. Plus the scales on a brown are VERY keeled and prominent, and aren't as compact as in the pic.

I'll have to agree with Roland on this one...

A Southern brown male.
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”

That's a slender snake so I'm inclined to go with a Dasypeltis inornata or Lamprophis fuscus - seen them both in that area, and that colour too. I'm inclined to agree that those scales are keeled because of the outline in the middle of the pic. It's pure speculation though, without a headshot.

Bear in mind with the colour that some digital point and shoot cameras are inclined to enhance colour to make pics more striking.
