Anyone seen this before?

Postby Rob » Fri Aug 31, 2007 10:50 pm

Recently Pythonodipsas and myself went collecting and amongst other things we found about 8 Black Headed Centipede eaters (Apparalactus capensis). 2 of these had no black head.

Anyone seen this before? Below is a pic of one with a normal coloured one.

Never seen this in Gauteng area, and I've found plenty up here. Interesting Rob.

These were found in the Natal Midlands. Released them both. Shouldve kept one.

Thanks for posting that Rob. You know I've been meaning to post about our trip to Natal Midlands, just not getting around to it.

We were digging up old discarded termitaria and found some Wolf Snakes (Lycophiodion capense), Herald Snakes (Crotaphopeltis hotamboiea), A beautiful striped phase Spotted Harlequin Snake (and silly me forgot to take pics!), 3 Cross-Marked Grass Snakes (Psammophis crucifer) of which 2 were together in a chamber, inside a termite mound. Also interesting and new to me was finding a Brown Water Snake (Lycodonomorphus rufulus) in a termite mound. It was also relatively far from water. We also found a Rain Frog (Breviceps spp?)

Will post pics soon.

Craig, are you sure that it was not perhaps a L.fuscus? Show some pics ;)

Ok, excuse the amount of pics, but lets start with 2 more of the Apparalactus without a black sock head.

A cute Herald snake.

The Water Snake. Mongoose I am very wary of mistaking these for L. fuscus. Especially in the Mooi River area as i know of 2 from here. A simple postocular count will reveal the species.

Wolf Snakes are so fascinating. They feel so soft.

Crossed-Marked Grass Snakes. Stunning! (Note the belly color)

Ah that froggie is too cute. I think it might be the same species I had found in Northern Natal. I'm sure there's a post about it somewhere.... will look in daylight :)

Found a few fuscus around the Umgeni mouth in the past - don't know how much the habitats changed now though.
