Trapelus / Agama ID Wanted

Trapelus / Agama ID Wanted

Postby Cordylus3 » Tue Dec 11, 2012 11:21 pm

Hello
After a long time searching for small interresting semi/desert ground dwelling agama species i found these.
I bought these guys on a reptile fair in germany the name that came with them was Agama mutabilis this i found out is not correct. it should be if so
Trapelus mutabilis. I am in doubt if even that is correct could it be Agama aculeata? Any tips to help me identyfiing them correctly would be very welcome.
And if anyone could tell me the difference between Trapelus and Agama it would be very nice to.
thanks in front
Rene

This is a tricky one. I will do a bit of research.

My initial thought was that it doesn't look like a typical agama due to the very smooth dorsal scales. I highly doubt it's A. aculeata.

Do you know if it is 100% African?

Hi Westley

The guy who sold them to me said they were from Africa and talking to him for some time i got the impression he new what he was talking about.
That it does not look like a tipical agama is maybe the difference with the genus Trapelus? My tought of aculeata was of its bleu throat and the distinctive dorsal pattern but doing some rechearce there are lots of small agamids with more or les bleu throats.
they are still in seperate small quarantine terrariums after some months i am planning to bring them over to a room sised terrarium were they can display some behaivior maybe that can help to identify them. i wil try to contact the seller and ask additionell info.

Great, glad you got a better ID.

Can't say I've ever heard of the species before.
