They can also reproduce without having to mate with a male.

So a Komodo Dragon reproduce sexually or asexually?
How does a sexual reporduction in Komodo Dragons work? Is the offspring a clone of the mother? Only her DNA is present, so it must be. Is that right?

Or are they like night adders (Causes rhombeatus) that can reserve sperm and use it later like a take away?

normaly komodos breed like all other monitors, but its true that there have been a virgin birth in a zoo not long ago. the female had never seen a male... pretty cool stuff. and the babys must be genetic clones of the mother...

Could this be a survival-of-the-species response triggered by certain factors? Eg. The absence of males?

There are all sorts of theories about the female laying eggs which hatched into males and other theories are that the babies would be female so that they can carry on with asexual reproduction like other reptile species have done like Flower pot snakes and Mourning geckos.

I have a friend who went to the zoo in question and says he photographed two animals in the one cage more than a year before this incident despite what the management said about them only ever owning one animal.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

So then this is plain BS then? I would have been really suprised to find that one of these things could reproduce like that.

i must say i never believed the parthenogenesis in komodos, i think it was a scam to get the zoo publicity personally - but then again who has fully proved them wrong
