Advice for cresties

Postby gekosin » Wed Jun 26, 2013 4:26 pm

Hi All,

As mentioned in my other post i am looking at making a new enclosure for our geckos this weekend.

Just want some advice though -

We currently have 2 geckos, bought from the expo in May. The one seems to be doing great and is an active hunter (he loves the crickets) and in general is a bit bigger than the other.

I have seen the smaller gecko trying to catch crickets but it seems slower and less able to catch them.

They also seem to be ok together (we are still not able to sex them)

Should i separate them to ensure the smaller one is also getting food or leave them together?

Is there maybe something i can do to help the smaller gecko catch its food?

Thanks

With regards to the feeding part why not use some feeding tongs, my sister uses that for her little frog and snaps it up quite happily!

I would seperate them antil you can sex them.
The different size of them can be an indicator that they are both males and one is more dominant then the other.
Hope you understand my english.

Either that or one is eating the other one's food. Separate them and consider getting roaches rather then crickets (roaches are more nutritous). You can also t.ry mealworms. I'd rather not feed it off of ttongs, because then the gecko can chase the insect and ger exercise.

Regarding the roaches, i currently have some Turks and Hissers but waiting on them to make babies.

Is there any other species I can try or will these suffice?

Hey Everyone,

Back with a few questions.

Our geckos seem to be doing well the smaller one is now growing and weighs all of 2 grams the other one is already up to 5.5 (they were bought in May so im guessing they are a bit small for their age?)

I am currently feeding them purity mixed with a bit of calcium 3 times a week (monday, wednesday, friday) dusted crickets (sunday and wednesday)

How many crickets should they be eating or can i give?
Purity wise i usually just put half a tea spoon down and they eat what they want as there is always some left over.

How would i go about sexing them to confirm what they are?

Thanks :)

Buy some proper Repashy crested food for them and you will see how they thrive.

Apperently its not easy to get anymore, its looks like people have been using Lorikeet Nectar

Taken from "http://www.loolilocks.co.za/html/bird_food.html"

Avi Plus - Feed for Cage Birds - Special Lorikeet Nectar

contains proteins, carbohydrates, monosaccharides, sugar, polysaccharides and fats in a soluble form as well as in suspension in the water so that Lorikeets get a balanced diet from the first sip. The proteins and amino acids have been balanced to meet avian requirements. A complete range of vitamins, minerals and trace elements has been added in the proportions recommended for avian species. This formula is suitable for feeding the Charmosyna family of Lorikeets. Also suitable for other Lories and Lorikeets in cold weather.

Its seems to have mostly the same stuff the Repashy does.

I can probably decant some into a container for you. I will just weigh it and see what it would cost. I have enough here for two years!

So i finally found some food for them at a petshop up the road from work. Its called Crested Gecko Diet. Comes is a brown bottle with a white lid. This is the same one I saw at the reptile expo when we got the little guys so hopefully I am now set for a while :)

The females metabolic rate is slower than the male counterparts. My males seem more responsive to live feeding over the females. Just keep an eye out with the conditioning of their stools. Using paper toweling for easier observation. My males seem to generally grow faster. Too much live food can make their stools runny and I agree with using Repashy every other day. With regards with intimidation I would separate younger pairs to avoid stress. Another great alternative live food source is Turkish roaches.
