BUSTED

Postby bitis keeper » Tue Mar 12, 2013 5:30 pm

So last week Thursday a well known poacher from SA was caught in Namibia by our local natcon officers he had 7 poached B. caudalis on him as well as some exotic species he smuggled in. He was given a fine of R4200
The snakes wont be euthanised and will end up at the living desert snake park in Swakopmund.

R4200? What a joke!
A Shangaan legend states that any man resting or sleeping in the shade of a baobab will become eccentric and forever be enslaved by Africa and its wilderness, guess it's too late for me.

No, its not PV.

It's a private collector/keeper.

That's like R600 per snake. Not much of a deterrent now is it. They sell for more than that locally. They get about 8 times as much in Europe.

R4200 fine? Almost makes smuggling a worthwhile endeavor when the penalties are so small vs the value of the animals, I'm disgusted.

Can now confirm that it was one Andrew Hacket that was caught and received a fine of $2100.00 Namibian. The reptiles were confiscated. Fined for possession and transport of wild animals without permits. That is why it is so low as they could not prove that he was going to export the animals which would have increased the fine. :smt018
