HERPETOLOGIST OF SPAIN

Postby Gabriel Martinez » Fri Dec 12, 2014 1:47 pm

Dear all,

My name is Gabri. Although my job is not biologist, I expend most part of my spare time studing herpetofauna (of all the world, but mainly focused in North Africa and Middle East). Although I love all the animals, I am specially freak about snakes. I really LOVE them since I was a child

The best in this life for me it´s enjoy walking for the habitats and find snakes and other reptiles, and take pictures disturbing them as minimum as possible. I discovered very nice post in this web so I will try to participate

Some years ago I bought the book of J. Marais about Southern Africa snakes, and I was really impressed about your snakes. Recently I thought in visiting South Africa with a friend of Israel. Not to get samples for scientific studies or nothing like that, just for tourism. So, if anybody of you would want to join us one day or more in our trip, it would be great. Please contact me in my email gabrimtnez@gmail.com

Yours

Gabri

Welcome to SA Reptiles Gabri. I'm sure you will enjoy the unique herpetofauna of South Africa.

Very nice pictures, I like the Naja shot in Morocco.

Thank you very much Warren. I agree with you, your herpetofauna is unique. It´s specially awesome your diversity of Bitis (we have a similar diversity in Morocco with the skinks, genus Chalcides). I attach some more photos of the Bitis (and looks-like Bitis) that I have seen. Hope to see in nature some of your Bitis species (and save them to be killed on roads). Cheers

Thanks predator678. I will send some emails with some species (I can only upload 3 pictures with each message), hope that you find it interesting :-)

In this, I attach some species of genus with northern limit in Morocco and southern limit in SA. Same genus, 7000 kms of distance!! (P. schokari reaches Middle East and more so maybe Morocco is just the northern limit in Africa)

Here, for the geckos lovers, one of the most impressive geckos I have ever seen. In South Africa, Madagascar and Australia there are also awesome geckos, but until now, these are my top 3

These are our horned vipers in North Africa and Middle East: True horned vipers Cerastes cerastes (the horn is a single scale) and the false horned vipers Pseudocerastes (horned by many small scales)

And my favourite genus of snake in the earth. Apart of Pseudocerastes urarachnoides, these cute vipers are my favourite!
