What's this snake?

Hey

My wife thinks this snake is a Puff Adder.

I'm not convinced, so I am here to ask for opinions.

Please let us know, and We found this little guy near our home, on the dirt road.
Once in a while we find one or two in out house. The sound a little like a small Darth Vader from Star Wars.

We have 3 children aged 5, 4 and 22 months.

That's a Night Adder.

They are very common in the right areas, especially where there are frogs for them to eat.

We have loads of frogs in the area.

Time for child education to be stepped up on snakes!!!

We also have a number of Rinkals encounters every year.
Do you think it's a good idea to invest in an anti venom kit of some sort?
Do such things exist, and if so, at what cost?

Rinkhals have not killed anyone in at least 30 years and night adders are not lethal (and antivenom does not work for night adders) so I would not worry too much. They are both still dangerous (potentially lethal for kids) but I would not hit panic mode.

Teaching the kids to avoid snakes would be a good idea. Killing them is also not the answer so just sweep them into a bucket or a box and through them out where they will not come into conflict with humans.

And remember that anti venom should only be administered when absolutely necessary. Rather seek medical help.
