Licenses for preformers

Postby AS.Legion » Thu Oct 06, 2011 2:00 am

OK... here is a question that I was wondering about.

I see a lot of show where people have tarantulas in the western cape and, unless they have a special license/permit, somebody in the crowd would tag them sooner or later.

So can a person get a specialised license? and how does one go about getting one?

Thats a good question ,every time I ask Cape Nature they always have the same answer, that it is illegal yet there are plenty of people openly showing their spiders off .Are you talking about the spiders that were on display at Cape Union Mart the other day?Who did they belong to I wonder?

Butterfly world and a few other places do have legally . As part of the permit system for parks you can keep them, but as far as I know just for show. There are regulations against breeding and selling.

My cape nature in Oudtshoorn told me as long as you get it on permit its fine you can keep it. So if you organize the transport permit legally the spider is yours or at least that's how it was explained to me.

You would need a permit to keep them privately, however if you use them in shows, or have them on public display you would need a performing animal license as well. These are issued annually by your local magistrate, and involves an inspection by the SPCA or AACL, and a certificate from the police, stating that their are no animal cruelty charges against you. The Performing Animals Protection Act covers this. I work with birds in a show enviroment, and have to have a license for the birds from the magistrate, a transport permit for the birds from Cape Nature which is renewed annualy and the captivity permit for the reptiles and the birds. What I find quite disturbing is that the only animals not covered by the PAPA act are reptiles, even here in the Western Cape. Even security guards with a guard dog have to have a PAPA license.

I saw some Ts when they had a show at Ratanga Junction.
So... local magistrate and police statement.

I wonder.. would a person than HAVE to do shows?

Hi All

The Performing Animals Protection Act no24 of 1935 and regulation 1672 relate to animals used for gaurding, performance and exhibition. You are required to have this license to display T's in a public place. The application needs to be made at your local magistrate. At the magistrates discretion they will request an animal welfare to inspect your premises, animals, transport and any other matters relating to the display of the animal. With regards to permits you would need to direct any questions directly to Cape Nature. I know that the T's you will currently see being displayed are owned either by researchers or are animals removed from the general public.
