Images of D. jamesoni Northern Angola

Postby Warren Klein » Wed Feb 20, 2013 7:38 pm

I took these photos this morning on the shore of the Congo River in Soyo Angola as we had a nice sunny day after being overcast for some time. This is the most beautiful species of Dendroaspis to my eyes and I can't pass up on a photo opportunity when we find these. This small female specimen (1190mm) was captured in a cashew nut tree by my alternate nyami while I was off on rotation in SA. It did strike at the grab stick a few times while positioning the snake and almost disappeared into the undergrowth as well during the photo shoot! It is unbelievable how these snakes can literally vanish in front of your eyes.

Stunning pics Warren, and you are right, by far the most beautiful Dendroaspis.
Thanks for sharing.

Stunning photo’s of such a beautiful snake. Their resemblance to D. viridis is quite striking. Now choosing the most beautiful Dendroaspis for me is impossible as they are all uniquely striking snakes. You are very lucky to have the job you do, I’m sure the vast majority of us are very jealous. :-D

Very nice. The others I have seen had darker tails. This one is really impressive.

Thanks for everyone’s nice comments. Working with this snake was defiantly a highlight and I am quite pleased with the results. The rest of the day was quite boring as I only caught a single bush snake.

Thanks Mr. J, I also thought these were West African greens when I caught my 1st one here but when you compare them it is quite obvious as D. viridis have huge scales compared to all other mambas. The more commonly seen subspecies of D. jamesoni also have black tails as BV mentioned.

While bagging the snake I thought to take some shots of the open mouth which was keen to bite anything that came near!

You can just see the fang in this pic.
