Postby Ales » Wed Oct 17, 2012 6:18 pm

I know that most herpers like all animals so I'm putting some pics of the baby African Pygmy Hedgehogs that i have recently bred out so I can show you all how cute they are.

This is an albino baby at around a week old:

All albino:

Both parents of the above babies were albino.
This is the father of the new batch of babies(coming up), he is not fully grown in this pic. The mother is albino. The babies are dark ,cinnamon and 2 albino:

This is a normal dark colour baby at 2 weeks old:

This is a very light colour, might be cinnamon, you can see by the dark eyes that it isn't albino:

Hope you like.

Oh, those are just the cutest! What are they like as pets? Are they bitey animals like hamsters? I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are...

@Zeiphex, You must have had horrible hamsters, I have 5 teddy bear hamster (+6 babies) and 2 dwarf hamsters (+4 babies) and non have ever bitten me, they are the sweetest angels. I even handle the babies @3 days old and the mums don't care. My one ham got injured and she didn't bite while I was treating her. I've been bitten more by Grumpy (my leopard gecko) than all rodents I have combined (that will be Grumpy - 5, Rodents - 3 (once by a rat, once by a mouse and once by a multimammate mouse)).

I would also like to know how hedgehogs are as pets.

They make quite nice pets. The only downsides is that you can't exactly cuddle them  but you can sit with them and let them run around a bit. They seem like slow animals but when i put mine into my outdoor aviary they run around like guinea pics.

They are easy to house, all they need is a wire cage(for guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas etc..) or a wooden tank. Newspaper is a good substrate and all other needs include food(cat pellets, insects, egg, some meat...), water, warmth, sleep box and maybe a running wheel.
They are however very messy and go to the toilet a lot. You can train them to go in a litter box but if they don't you will be replacing the newspaper every 2 days.

No they are not nippy animals, I have never read about them being nippy and my animals have never bitten me. If you find a very stressed out or wild hedgehog I'm sure it will try. Curling up is their main defense so if they are trusting enough to come out then they won't be feeling the need to bite.

They are nocturnal and will sleep right through the day, and at night when they're up they are very active.
What a world....
