The auctions I have seen on overseas sites have led to more bad vibes than anything else.

Very rarely do the reptiles reach prices you would expect them to sell for.

The people who win the auctions are also often disappointed and then the mud slinging starts.

How does one control an auction?

We are all (mostly) anonymous on the forum. I'll bet my bottom dollar some idiots will auction off animals they don't have just for fun and other guys will place animals on auction, only ending up not selling due to them not getting a high enough price.

The theory behind it is great, but getting it to work is a whole other story.

Isn't is easier just to make an offer on an item in the existing classifieds?

I agree with you with the messing around,you just gotta put a few rules in place and the seller can say for example 2 year old female albino corn snake on auction from 11am-2pm starting at 150(the sellers minimum price he's willing to accept)and after that its between him and the final bidder!we have a reptile group on bbm and our auctions are going well!so far,but ofcoarse the final say is up to the mods,I was just making a suggestion seeing as everyone is battling to sell snakes!

Just as Bushviper has said.
It causes problems.
It has to be managed properly.

Take a look at Satarantula.co.za auctions that went South fast.
Due to Buddie system and people not sticking to the time frame that they have set.
The only issue with Auctioning stuff off, is you might end up paying 2X more for a snake in an auction, than just buying it straight up.

Rules have to put into place, and have to be obeyed.
Also what I would suggest, just like in an Auction you have a Auctioneer, the same should apply to the whole auction Thread, remove some of the human error and buddy system out of the Auction.

I had a friend here today from the site and he was complaining about the one auction that he lost the spiders he was biding, because of the guy closing the thread early.

Why not do the auction in a bid or buy style?
This way the human error is minimized.

Separate the auctions from the forum. I think there are possibilities with an eBay clone.

I have one ethical concern with this concept. In any auction system money talks. Highest bidder wins. Is this the approach one should take with the sale of venomous snakes? I personally feel (emphasis on this point) that a seller should always be happy that the buyer of a venomous snake should be capable of keeping the snake safely. No how would you tell your 15 year old, inexperienced with venomous snakes, yet highest bidder that you don't think he should be taking that snake?

This site has a classifieds system in place already. If you see the animal you want, negotiate price with the seller. If he is unwilling to do that, well then he most probably wouldn't have put the animal up for auction in any case.
