I can't see a problem with that. Although I would use the same identification number/code for the specimen when submitting samples to different people. It also may be an idea to let each researcher know that the sample has been given to others. This is because it is standard practise to publish DNA sequences on an online database, when research papers are published. If sequences for the same specimen are represented multiple times on the database, then it may cause problems for future reseachers who may want to use the online data. I think as long as people know, then care can be taken to avoid these problems.

cheers.

Can venom be used for DNA?

Can dry skins be used for DNA? It makes the identification less accurate, but might work for other studies.

Thea please remind me your mailing address. Will send vials as soon as I get forms and protocol from Axel.

Don't use venom at this stage BV but Axel may have something to say about that.

BS - dry skins? do you mean shed skins. Shed skins have to be fresh; I think I supplied a skin from a gaboon that had been skinned at St Lucia, it was old and pretty US.

Thank you all for your response so far. We would love to hear more from other areas, e.g. Eastern Cape.

One more thing Armata. this may sound a bit stupid but would you mind putting some of the common names in your list.

You can get DNA out of venom, but it's not the best source, and usually, it is easier and safer to get your sample from the less pugnacious end of the snake.

The use of DNA from venom would be primarily for forensic purposes, i.e., identifying what species a venom came from. I have thought of doing that for the venoms sold by some chemical supply companies, it might well cause them serious embarrassment when it comes to the accuracy of their labelling. Blackmail - another way to secure funding for research in desperate times....

Armata would it help if you sent us the form to place on the site so that people can simply download and print it at their leisure?
