This forum is to record any reptiles that you find. We would like the locality only to the nearest town or dam or wherever the reptile was seen. eg 15 km north of Warmbaths is more than enough. We dont want to hear 2.5 km outside Witbank along the N4 Highway right next to the fallen down tree on the left of the road. The reasoning is that we dont need to hand a "treasure map" to prospective illegal collectors.

Try to get at least a head shot, a full body shot and if possible a shot showing the underside as well. Under no circumstances must you harm the reptile or put your life or limbs in danger. If you can guestimate the size that would be an advantage. If you just drop a cooldrink can or matchbox next to the animal we can then calculate the size for you. (Remember to take the box or can with you when you leave, we do not litter!)

You are welcome to give other pertinant information like it was raining, at night, on a tar road, being attacked by a eagle or whatever. This could one day allow us to assume certain patterns and use these to educate people about the movement of snakes or other reptiles.

The pics need not be bigger than 640 by 480 pixels in size. Try to host these pictures on a reliable host and you are welcome to host it in the SAReptiles gallery. A programme like Irvinview has the resize ability built in and is very effective in bringing a 3 meg pic down to 50 kb with minimal loss of quality.

This is not a competition so even if it is the 7th redlipped snake found that week it is still important to submit the pictures.

If you cannot identify the reptile that is fine we will attempt to do that for you so the clearer the photo the better for us. We might ask you to forward the original (bigger) photo in certain cases so dont overwrite the pics when you reduce the size.

You need not have collected the reptile either so if you have a picture of a agama in the top of a tree thats fine just submit it in any case. Same goes with crocodiles and other dangerous reptiles.

This is not an alternative to the SARCA website but just some fun for the forum. If you have the details please contribute to SARCA as well. (www.saherps.net)

This is just for fun and to brag about your powers of observation. It does not have to be indigenous snakes so our overseas members are not excluded.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
