National reptile inspection and raids

Postby Andrew » Thu Apr 11, 2013 6:35 pm

What is the truth regards the rumours that a N/Cape Conservation guy is accompanying the KZN Conservation department on unannounced inspections and raids on reptile keepers?

-Changed topic title as the "raids" are clearly not localized to KZN-

I've heard the same today...

In the capes they are looking for Exotics, in Gauteng they are looking for indigenous, and in Natal they are looking for TOPS.

I've heard of three people (one person in each province) has been inspected unanouncly.

Infact the person in Kzn who was inspected is a very well known breeder.

But if he was caught with anything, that I don't know.

Aswell with the other two people. But I'm sure that Nature conservation has raided a lot more people.

My question is why do they only start now? Also, why did they they decide to go full force with it?

I heard of the raids this week in P.E.
I don't see any reason why keepers should be worried as long as they are keeping to the laws. We have it easy here in KZN and if people are messing up keeping TOPS without permits, than this needs to be stopped before they ruin it for us big time.

I am very surprised to hear this, considering our financial issues here in KZN with conservation. But it is about time we stepped up here and started doing things. Its a good thing for us here.

I have no worries at all with people doing checks and making sure that things are being done legit.
The only people who stress and fret are those who do wrong or benefit from people doing the wrong.
I agree, Shaun, KZN has it easy so why be stupid and keep things you shouldn't.
Especially when there are so many other options we have and privalages other provinces don't.

I think raid is the wrong word to be used here.
They are documenting, species that are kept and photographing them.
Evolution is an imperfect and often violent process. A battle between what exists, and what is yet to be born.

If they coming unexpected, it's a raid. If they call ahead and make an appointment and inform you that they would like to document, etc, then yes, maybe then you can call it documenting.

Ok lets see what they have to say about monitoring the illegal culling of TOPS species in the traditional medicine markets. If they want to play hard ball then lets play the entire field.

I really wish they would do something about the guys selling chameleons and tortoises next to the roads. Sun City is a very popular spot and last weekend I was driving to my sister in Carletonville and at the intersection at Tarlton they were trying to sell chameleons. I swear if I didn't have my kids in the car, I would've taken him on. Had a look at it and raced off with the chameleon and rather go release it. Technically I would then be breaking the law though, and I don't think the defense of "they were breaking it first" would have applied.
