Snake Identification

Postby brandenp » Thu Feb 11, 2016 5:07 pm

Hi there,

I wonder if someone can assist in identifying the attached snake. This snake was caught in the local school grounds in Pinetown KZN. looks like some sort of adder/viper.

Hi.That is an immature Herald Snake(Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia). It has whitish lips in your area but red over most other areas in S.A. Classed as mildly venomous but is really almost harmless. The white dots on the body fade as it grows older. Most schoolboys have kept one as a pet at one time or another.

Not really harmless xD mildly venomous. Would prefer it to not bite me. But if it bites me it's fine :)

They usually like areas with a lot of moisture. So let it go close to a dam or something like that.
