Beardie sound asleep

Postby Midget » Thu May 25, 2006 12:21 pm

Hi
I live in durban and I've just had my bearded dragon for a few months now.He used to come out and sit under the heat,
but lately he is sleeping under the log, and he has been doing it for the last week straight.
he does not eat anything, he just sleeps.

is it normal? do they hibernate during the winter?

Please can anyone help.

Thanks

Hi Midget,

Firstly welcome to the forum...

Secondly... My bearded dragon is also doing that. She just wants to sleep as well and she is not really interested in food at the moment.

Keep an eye on your beardie. If it starts looking weak or ill, get it to a vet.

I would suggest weighing it, and then weigh it once a week to ensure it's not loosing too much weight.

Welcome midget. What temperatures are you keeping your beardie at?

Hi midget and welcome to the forum.

My beardies have slowed down a little but put anything that moves in their cage and they wake up very quickly.

As BB said just keep an eye on it.
I sometimes give my beardies a mixture of calcium +- 1/2 t-spoon, glucose +-1/2 t-spoon diluted in about 1 cup of water and just let them drink a little (as much as they want/will take)
I give this to them with a dripper or syringe.
This can really help give them a boost.

Hi Midget and welcome! :D

How old is your beardie? If they are less than a year old then it is apparently a concern if they hibernate as most start hibernating after a year of age - this is what i have gleaned from the overseas forums so don't shoot me

I would agree with BB that you need to weigh and keep checking on him weekly - maybe offer a titbit when you rouse him for his weigh?

then of course temps, what uv light, how old is the uv light etc

Thanks guys,
I weighed him this morning at about 34g
got the normal reptile for lizards I think it is the 8.0 or something UV light about 2 months old and an additional spot light.

I woke him today to weigh him and afterwards I placed him in the light on top of his log.

I will have a look see this afternoon when I get home to see what he has done.

Thanks for all the help

Midget

Do you know how old your beardie was when you got him? You said in your first post that you've had him for several months now, and 34g is round about the weight of a beardie of about 2-4 months of age.

How close can he get to his uvb light? he needs to be able to get between 6 - 12 inches from the light.

I recently realised that my beardie couldn't get close enough to his uvb light and that was why he was very lethargic and didnt want to eat or bask.

Went out and bought a MVB bulb and he has totally transformed within 2 weeks.

He was about 8 months when I got him, or that is what the the guy told me.
Then he must be about 10 or 11 months old now.

the light is pretty close to him when he sits on his log.

imm going to buy some more food for him today and I will monitor him and see how he does in the next few days.

What is his total length? if he is about 10 - 11 months and weighs 34 grams then there is definitely wrong, he should be weighing between 300 and 600grams by that age.

If you have any pics of him it would be good to post some because there is definitely something wrong with him if that is his actual weight.

That guy probably sold you a sick beardie.

Hi Midget

You might want to take your beardie in for a fecal or take a fecal in for testing - phone your vet and ask if they do that sort of thing. It is very unusual for beardies under a year to bruminate - they are supposed to be lively and ready to eat and hunt anything that passes their line of vision. Also he should now be heading into juvie stage when they get big for their feets and munch crix with an evil gleam in their eye and are slightly less fragile than their hatchling stage.

What substrate is he on and what is his poop like - does it look like normal (some white urates and then the poop portion in a sack)?
What is your basking temp and your cool side temp?
What is he eating and how many ie 15 1/4 crix a day?
Is he off prey and only eating veg? What veg?
Supplements like calcuim and multi vits and how often have you been dusting?
Is he dehydrated? Are you misting or bathing you dragon?
