Is a license needed to sell Leo's in SA

Postby Leo owner » Mon Nov 23, 2020 12:43 pm

I'm wondering if you need a license to sell leopard geckos in South Africa

I'm looking into breeding leopard geckos but I want to start it off in the correct manner.
I know that you need a license to own a leopard gecko in the Western Cape. But I'm unsure if it is needed to have a license to sell leopard geckos.

Any responses will be appreciated .

I suggest contacting your local natcon offices to get an official response.

Things may have changed, but from what I recall years back, you, as the breeder only need licenses for your animals, and when they breed and you want to sell, you need to apply for a transport permit from your place to the buyer's place.

He/she then uses that transport permit to apply for their keeping permit.

Hope that helps.

Leos are a blacklisted species in the western cape, unfortunately we are not allowed to keep them, and Cape nature wont issue permits for them.

Ok so regarding keeping Leopard Geckos in the Western Cape.

I contacted the Westen Cape branch of the Biodiversity Conservation to finde out if they were allowed even with a permit an this was the response:
"I’m afraid that we do not allow leopard geckos in the WCP."
