Skink for identification

Postby Isidro » Mon Apr 22, 2013 8:59 pm

Hello all!
My father found this skink on a trip to South Africa in 2003. It was found in the Giftberg mountains in the way from Cape Town to Goudini Spa.
I've found it similar to some Trachylepis, but my father insist that this is a Mabuya.
Please can somebody help me with the exact ID?
Thanks!

This looks like a Trachylepis to me but Im not 100% sur about the species name though.
Mabuya genius has been renamed recently to Trachylepis hence the confusion...

Trachylepis is a new genera created for the southern African Mabuya, so both you and your father are right, haha.

I would venture a guess and say it's T. homalocephela.

OK, thanks! I've found in fact very similar to T. homalocephala but I don't know if there are more easily mistakable species in the zone.
