Bitis rhinoceros

Bitis rhinoceros

Postby Kakibos » Mon May 12, 2014 2:49 pm

Hey guys I got myself a Bitis rhinoceros at the expo(thanks BV for the help). Here is a few pics off him on leaves I picked up in my yard.
I only used the leaves for the photos but am unsure if it will be safe to use as part of the substrate. I am currently using e-mulch and coco husk.

Enjoy.

What I know about the Venomous species names is putrid, but isn't that a gabonica.

Almost Roland.

The names of this complex has changed quite a bit the past few years:
West African Gaboon: B. rhinocerus
East african Gaboon: B. gabonica
Rhinorecus Viper: B. nasicornis

It's crazy that the name rhinocerus is not given to the Rhino Viper, but that's why I find common names more confusing than scientific name.

BTW, awesome snake Kakibos. If I were to keep venomous, they would be on my list. It's amazing how well they blend with the leaves. I doubt you will have any issues using leaves in your enclosure; just make sure there are no spiders etc on them.

Thanks guys, yes Westley is right, according to my knowledge the common name for B. rhinoceros is Rhinoceros viper and B. nasicornis is Rhino viper, "gaboon" is not used anymore except for B. gabonica

Any case thanks again, now I can look forward to go and pick up the leaves from my lawn :D , oh and Westley I will toast all the nasties out the leaves with the microwave...dont let the wife hear :smt018
