Kgalagadi trip

After 3 nights of intensive searching, we found this oke a few metres from our tent entrance!

Image
This puffy curled up 50cm behind a bench at one of the rest points in the park...we pointed him out to the next visitors to avoid a nasty accident!

First decent quality picture I've seen of a Barking Gecko in-situ, well done!

Westley, this one took some effort. I used a 150mm Macro + Nikon D70...this gave me the necessary working distance to still get a 1:1 magnification, but, in the same breath, respect our choir master. I used a hand-held flashlight and the built-in flash to allow settings for a bit more depth-of-field. I managed to get 15-20 good shots, but could not get one while he let rip with one of those deafening barks!

Man, I was just about to upload some photos I took while up there last week and ask how in the hell do you find Barking Geckos, now I see this. I looked 2 solid nights for them behind our place (just south of the park entrance), with no luck. Just following the calls and taking small steps to get closer and closer but damn if they aren't hard to get a shot of. I'll be posting some trip photos in a bit.

What I have heard people do is they look for the hole. You then set up your camera and wait. When you hear the gecko you press the shutter and you might have the gecko in focus.

Good old Nikon D70...all jpeg and no fiddling! Must admit Sigma's 150mm f2.8 Macro is the best!
Just got back from another Kgalagadi stint 2 days ago. This time round freezing temps and saw very little in the line of reptiles...2 juv molesnakes and a giant of an adult being chomped by a pair of Tawny Eagles, 1 Kalahari Tent tortoise, 1 puffy and 2 bright orange Capes crossing the road.
