Please help with identification of this tiny snake?

Postby de Wets Wild » Sat Jun 20, 2015 6:03 pm

Hi everyone

I'm so glad I've come across this forum, and would sincerely appreciate your assistance in identifying this tiny snake we found on the road at the Amazibu Hide, in the Eastern Shores section of iSimangaliso Wetland Park between St. Lucia town and Cape Vidal on the 14th of June 2015. It was only 12cm or so long and rather slow-moving. The vegetation in the immediate vicinity is sandy grassland with stands of palms.

I've checked all my fieldguides, searched online (which is how I got to this fantastic page) and still have no clue. :smt017

Thank you in advance guys!

Im not sure...The colour throws me a bit... but the body plan makes me think that that might be a dark coloured slug eater (Duberria lutrix)

Please dont take my word for it, but that will be my first guess, can some of the more experienced members offer an opinion?

Dont fly! 4X4! The noble eagle may soar! but a weasel wont get sucked into a jet intake valve...

I agree with StevenZi.

But I cannot blame Bernice. This is certainly not a typical specimen. At least you got the genus right ;)

Thank you very much everyone!

I was certain you'd be able to help, and I was not disappointed.

I'll be spending much more time on your forum, learning as much as I can from all of you!
